It's good to see that this is being taken seriously and you have taken the time to come and join the discussion.

I will watch with interest to see where this leads.

I have to say from my point of view that the industry could do with with a huge kick in the rear end.

While i have no doubt that there are loads of people who are happy with the service provided (as a great number of our members seem to be) with the other makers listed here, i feel i have to say i would never buy one. 
Why?
Because these knives look like the sort of thing my grandfather would (and probably did) own. I'm sure there is a market for "proper old knives" but where are the innovative designs and cutting edge materials? where is the flair and passion for the industry that originally made this country and the name "Sheffield" synonymous with quality?

It seems that there has been no innovation, no forward progression. "This is the way we have always done things" seems to be the order of the day.

Esta es la aportación de un forero de BB (British blades) a la discusión iniciada por un comprador insatisfecho y defraudado por la compra de una navaja de la marca A. Wright and Son en la tienda virtual Famous Sheffield Shop cuyo propietario es el mencionado Paul. 

Aquí la argumentación cambia de sentido, ya no se discute la calidad sino la innovación y el diseño de la industria cuchillera británica comparada con la americana. El forero o forista -como quiera que sea- abomina de los viejos modelos. Quiere acción...

No puedo estar más de acuerdo: quememos la tradición y obremos utillaje para cuando a uno se le grille la sesera y se eche al monte (también la guerrilla urbana sería una opción razonable). Claro, que también tendría que hacerse según actúan las empresas aludidas: subcontratar en China, Pakistán, Italia o Japón...

¿Conocerá el foristero la navaja que aquí se presenta? Me temo que sí. Pero no sabrá apreciarla en lo que vale. Sería difícil encontrar un modelo más, más...¿ergonómico?. Plano, discreto, robustísimo, resistente a la salinidad, sin mantenimiento ni mecanismos de asistencia a la apertura. Hecho así con la experiencia de lustros. Mejor y más barato, no es posible. Ni opinel, ni Ostia (sin "h").

La Pérfida Albión, otra cosa no, pero de pirateos, patentes de corso, filibusterismo, barcos reales, Peñones, colonias allende el océano, adminículos de latón, nudos y  demás enredos de mar sabe más que, que...nosotros.Y la navaja responde a esta tradición. 

Magnífica para lo que está fabricada. Así la vocean:

En la entrada anterior ya se habló de las máquinas del tiempo defectuosas. Como no se aprende de los errores, seremos fatigosos en el énfasis. Continuando con la queja de un quídam británico que compró una pieza en la tienda virtual Famous Sheffield Shop, ahora se leerá la contestación de un forista al dueño de la tienda, Paul:

The producing hand made good in the UK is very expensive to and majority of manufacturing in the UK is on high value and bespoke goods; yet Sheffield production knife makers on the whole are still turning out the same things they were 60 years ago, while that is all well and good, and there is no doubt a niece for it, I just don't see why there is so little innovation from these companies. 

American Companies like Benchmade and Spyderco are able to produce high end knives which not only appeal to the collectors market, but are also in-line with current technologies in Steel and materials and their QC is second to non. I would personally love to see Sheffield knife makes start to take this route, and try and compete in function not just nostalgia. Instead of every makers turning out the old patterns, how about make a new design with recent progression taken into account.

Bueno, se sale un poco de lo que nos ocupa, pero sí pone el acento en que se siguen empleando técnicas viejas y sistemas de  producción obsoletos en los que los controles de calidad se impongan.

Esta primera es de Trevor Ablett; modelo Ettrick (ciudad de donde surgió el modelo o en donde era muy apreciado -que es lo más probable-). La anuncian así

Stag handle. Peach pruner blade. Ettrick shape. Overall length six an half inches.

   La que sigue es una Wright, y también es la recibida tras devolver la primera que me envió la Famous Sheffield Shop pues la unidad devuelta, aunque tenía bonitas cachas parejas, tenía una hoja con la misma holgura respecto al eje que las bisagras de mi antiguo Simca 1000. La vocean así:

Como puede observarse, las cachas son asimétricas, por decirlo suavemente; consuela -poco, la verdad- el que presentan por ello mismo un agarre inmejorable...
